Laziness as an Art
Panda Fundy spent his days indulging in sweet bamboo, with nothing else piquing his interest beyond the succulent leaves and stalks that melted on his tongue. Each bite brought Fundy immense pleasure…
Occasionally, he yearned to add some variety to his life, such as making friends, or better yet, finding a mate with whom to rear little cubs! Alas, this idea remained just that—a thought. In search of a companion, he would need to charm her with his gentle growl and offer the finest bamboo before she would agree to help Fundy procreate.
In the Native Swamp
However, despite being one of the laziest creatures on Earth, Fundy did manage to acquire friends—albeit by pure happenstance. Fundy never took a single extra step to befriend anyone. He lived his entire life in a small clearing, occasionally venturing slightly farther to seek out more food.
Best Friend
One day, a boar’s snout emerged from the bamboo thicket. With a set of magnificent tusks, the boar looked at Fundy devouring green stalks and amiably grunted. The panda was more than willing to share his meal with the boar, who adored roaming the world in search of adventures and new acquaintances. Thus, a friendship blossomed!
The boar frequently visited Fundy to share tales of everything happening in the world. He was friends with a little bird, who bore all the news and happily relayed it to her friends.
Best Girlfriend
On one occasion, the boar arrived at Fundy’s side with a monkey. She too had a great fondness for bamboo and quickly found common ground with the panda. The monkey taught Fundy how to prepare a special dish: a peeled banana should be wrapped in the most tender bamboo leaf and eaten in small bites.
After trying this new delicacy, the black-and-white bear was overwhelmed with delight! He also grew to love the monkey wholeheartedly. Thus, Fundy gained yet another friend.
It Seems They’ve Consumed Everything…
The friends often gathered together to chat and munch on bamboo. Before long, there was hardly anything left in the clearing. Fundy clutched his head in despair—he had nothing to eat!
When the boar arrived at the clearing, he found his friend distressed and hungry. Fundy shared his plight. Soon, the monkey came to visit him, followed by the bird, who filled the boar in on the happenings of the world.
A Long Journey to the Promised Land
Determined to help Fundy, the friends decided to assist him. The bird spoke of an endless valley where truly gigantic bamboo grew. Fundy became intrigued by this paradise. He asked his friends to guide him there or at least explain how to reach that limitless valley.
The lively group set off on their journey. Occasionally, they encountered wild animals, yet none dared to attack the comrades, who stood united for one another. They traveled for an entire week—Fundy had never wandered that far, making this trek a true challenge for him!
A Sea of Bamboo and Pure Gold
At last, the friends arrived in the vast valley. It was truly an awe-inspiring place—Fundy had never seen such immense bamboo!
