Someone’s time for retirement has come
A couple of years later, Muriel was assigned to the astronomical branch of the GK-12 laboratory. The young and promising specialist was appointed as the assistant to Professor Pickles, who, at the age of ninety-three, was no longer able to carry out his duties as head.
He often fell asleep at his desk, forgot his responsibilities, and mixed up the names of scientific staff. Furthermore, the elderly Pickles could no longer sit for hours, gazing through the telescope, searching for new celestial bodies, though he was supposed to send a report to headquarters at least once a year. Otherwise, the big bosses might think the GK-12 lab was unnecessary and would simply transfer the staff to other departments.
A Gifted Assistant
Muriel took on half of Pickles’ work. The professor was incredibly pleased with his new assistant, who allowed him to shorten his workday to an almost ridiculous extent. In fact, Pickles hardly did anything except sign papers.
When Muriel had proven himself as one of the most responsible employees in the lab, the professor entrusted him with a spot at the telescope. Now, his assistant had to solve complex equations to calculate the coordinates of points that needed to be observed in great detail.
